The UW Master of GIS for Sustainability Management online program is designed with working professionals in mind. With the exception of three brief on-campus sessions, classes are conducted online, giving you the flexibility to do your coursework largely on your own schedule and at your own location.
How Online Learning Works
From your computer, you’ll connect to an online learning management system called Canvas. This web-based software allows you to access course materials, including recorded lectures, and interact with faculty and fellow classmates in online forums at any time.
As in a classroom course, you start and finish each online course with the rest of your cohort. All students have the same deadlines, and you will need to keep up with all lectures, readings and assignments.
Courses meet online in real-time on Tuesday and Thursday evenings using the web conferencing platform Adobe Connect. These sessions provide an opportunity to review and discuss course material and get assistance on assignments. Students are strongly encouraged to attend.
Lab assignments are an important part of your coursework. These assignments focus on helping you learn to use the capabilities of geospatial software such as Esri's ArcGIS Desktop, ArcGIS Server and ArcGIS Online and InVEST.
- Computer that meets the system requirements for latest version of ArcGIS Desktop
- Reliable high-speed internet connection (broadband recommended)
- Headset and microphone with USB connector
